How to restyle or paint melamine wood furniture?

From the materials needed to prepare the surface to drying: Here are the essential steps to successfully paint your melamine wood.

What paint should I use for melamine?

The choice of paint is not trivial, since not all paints are suitable for melamine. Indeed, it is a specific type of wood, which is why the use of a specific type of paint that will provide better resistance and durability will be suggested.

Prepare your support

As with all painting work, preparatory work is the first necessary step and will allow you to guarantee an optimal result.

First of all, your melamine furniture must be clean, and to clean it you will first need to degrease the furniture with acetone using a sponge and a little elbow grease. To finish cleaning the furniture, use a clean cloth very slightly dampened with clear water to remove any remaining dirt.

Afterwards you can sand your furniture with fine-grain sandpaper to help the paint adhere.

Once the furniture is prepared, make sure you have all the necessary equipment to paint your furniture (roller, brush, paint tray, protective tarpaulin and undercoat if necessary)

Note that when using Algo furniture paint, you do not need to apply a primer to the surface, which is a real advantage compared to other paints.

Applying paint to melamine

When painting your furniture, we recommend applying two coats of paint using a lacquer roller and a round brush to define the corners.

To ensure you don't overflow, using masking tape can be beneficial.

When applying with a roller, the application is mainly done in a crisscross pattern: vertically first, then in horizontal stripes. The amount of paint on the surface will thus be uniform between each layer of paint, thus avoiding roller marks.

The recommended drying time between each coat is 24 hours for the best possible hold. While drying, take care of your furniture and do not handle it too much to avoid possible marks and shocks.

What varnish for melamine furniture?

Using a coat of varnish can be useful, especially if your furniture will be used: the varnish is applied in a single coat and will protect the paint on your furniture.
