Bien préparer la peinture de la chambre d'enfant

How to prepare for painting a child's room

There are many possibilities and occasions for painting a child's room: preparing for the birth of a future baby, following tastes and trends that change as they grow up, supporting the desire for personalization... The world of childhood makes the palette of usable colors even wider than in other rooms and it is necessary to make the right choices while preserving the health of children by looking for the healthiest paints possible. All this makes the child's room a particularly important place when it is time to carry out work.

What type of paint should you choose for a boy's or girl's bedroom?

More and more of us are paying attention to the composition of the products we use, especially when we know that different chemical solvents present in the composition of paints can be responsible for allergies, headaches or itching as we talked about in a previous article .

Throughout your home in general, but in a child's bedroom in particular, it is therefore important to avoid as much as possible paints that contain high levels of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, substances that accumulate in the ambient air when the paint dries) as well as oil and glycerine paints. Instead, favor more natural acrylic paints and promote pots displaying labels such as the European Ecolabel, NF standards or even a low level of VOC emissions into the indoor air.

Even better: turn to bio-sourced ecological paints like all Algo paints whose resin is made from algae, are Ecolabel certified, give off very little odor during their application and drying and which emit less than 0.5g of VOCs per liter of paint compared to several dozen in standard paints. Our paints are also very washable, which can be useful for easily cleaning your walls when they transform into giant canvases under the pencils and felt-tip pens of budding little artists.

In all cases, as with other rooms in your home, prepare the walls properly , apply an undercoat and let each coat dry thoroughly for at least 6 to 12 hours before applying the next. Also remember to ventilate the room well during and after your work to properly renew the air.

Our original decorating ideas for children's bedroom walls

Painting a child's room is a great opportunity to apply colors in an original, creative, and off-the-beaten-track way. And the possibilities are endless!

You can opt for a very colorful wall and leave the rest of the room in a very neutral shade for the bedroom walls, this will really add a touch of cheerfulness to the room without being harsh on your eyes. And if your child changes their favorite color regularly, you will only have one wall to repaint!

Bright colors can also be used to delineate a space dedicated to play, while calmer colors can be reserved for the sleeping area, for example. With this in mind, you can also create a space with chalkboard paint to allow your child to unleash their creativity by having fun without constraints directly on their wall.

You can also paint geometric shapes or use stencils to create personalized patterns and atmospheres according to your children's tastes: unicorns, clouds, dinosaurs, pirates, princesses, animals, everything is possible and your work can even turn into a fun activity to share together. Pretty stickers can complete the decoration and are practical to put on as well as to remove when tastes evolve.

A bedroom isn't just about walls: think about the ceiling too! Painting it black or another dark color can quickly transform it into a veritable starry sky by adding constellations or even fluorescent stickers that your child can admire from their bed.

Blue, sea green or white: which shade should you choose?

Here again, the range of possibilities is wide and the opportunity is great to make your child's bedroom a very colorful room.

There are several options available to you depending on the age of your child. If you are painting a room for a newborn, you can easily opt for a light and soothing color such as sandy brown , sky blue or even pastel colors that will take you away from the classic blue or pink that we often see. If your child is already older, listen to their desires and preferences to help them make their room a real cocoon in which they will feel comfortable. By taking their tastes into account, you can offer them a selection of suitable shades and choose together the color(s) to use.

To give you some food for thought, soothing and fresh shades such as beige , a restful green or pastel colors can soften, brighten and enlarge the room.

If you are interested in particularly intense and vivid colors, they are perfect for a section of wall: yellow , red , orange or even a bright green .

You can, of course, choose to combine different colors. To create a beautiful harmony between the shades, it is recommended to use a maximum of three different colors, including one strong color and two calmer ones for balance.
