Today, we suggest you start with the room where you ultimately spend the most time: the bedroom!
If you're embarking on this adventure for the first time, don't worry: in just a few minutes you'll be a brush pro!
Which color(s) to choose?
With so many paint colors to choose from, it can be difficult to choose or visualize. Here are a few tips to help narrow down your selection.
The possibilities are almost endless when it comes to bedroom colors, whether light or dark . It's important to know that colors influence our mood and emotions : bright colors stimulate us and give us energy, while more neutral colors promote concentration, and blue tones promote tranquility.
Depending on the shape and surface area of your room, you can play with colours: light, natural shades such as pearl grey , beige or ivory can make the space appear larger , while darker shades and strong colours such as red, dragonfly blue or brown can reduce the proportions of the room and give it a warmer feel.
A classic: white paint
A symbol of purity and innocence , white creates a bright, neutral base that brings energy and calm to the room. It's a perfect color for brightening a room and giving it a sense of space.
When it comes to paint, you'll quickly notice that there's a whole range of different whites! To get away from the traditional, slightly cold pure white , you can turn to a more pearly white or this Algo white shade with a slightly vanilla appearance.
The power of blue paint:
Blue is often associated with the sky and the sea, as well as a relaxing power, a feeling of security and confidence. This color traditionally represents wisdom and hygiene, so it is often used in the bathroom , office or even sunny rooms. Blue is known to promote creativity , inspiration and bring freshness . Different shades of blue can very well find their place in a bedroom and give it an elegant look.
The timeless gray paint:
Gray is one of the basic and neutral colors par excellence that always remains sober, timeless and elegant . Gray brings wisdom and softness to the interior and has the advantage of being able to be associated with other colors quite easily to create a beautiful harmony. The chromatic palette of gray being very wide, it is a color that comes in many shades , from the lightest to the darkest .
Which wall to paint?
Now you know which shades you like and suit you best, it's time to take action! Deciding which wall to paint depends on the number of colors you want to apply and your preferences.
Applying a color
Once you've found the color that suits you , it's very simple: just repaint your entire room to create a monochrome ensemble . This is the most classic method for repainting a room: by using a neutral shade you can then create the atmosphere of your choice by playing with the furnishings and decoration. Depending on the furniture, rugs, cushions and other elements you choose, you can break the monotony of the room by adding touches of color and specific textures.
What if you don't want to stick to just one color?
The application of two colors
By combining two colors to repaint your room, you will move away from the monochrome framework and create a contrast that will structure your room by giving it a more original atmosphere. A very simple rule to find your winning combo is to always combine a dark shade with a lighter color . Avoid putting two dark colors together, they tend to dull the room.
The most common way to use 2 colors to repaint a bedroom is to focus on a single wall in particular (about 20% of the room) to be colored in an intense and strong shade (the one at the headboard or opposite). The other walls remain in a fairly sober color . You can therefore have fun and dare to use original shades (raspberry, red, navy blue, dark green) that you can combine with more classic and lighter shades. The result should be bright and elegant!
Using two shades can also be very interesting on the same wall by separating the colors horizontally. This will give your room a unique look full of charm and aesthetics.
Combining two colors can also be useful for redecorating a room with unusual dimensions, such as a loft. By playing with the different sizes and heights of the walls , the colors can create a contrast that will highlight the room's perspective.
There's also nothing like two-tone to structure your room and delineate different areas of your bedroom . You can choose to paint only the wall behind your bed, which will give you a colorful bed frame. It's also possible to visually delineate your dressing room by giving this area a darker or lighter color than the rest of the room.
If you're unsure which two shades to choose, know that white goes well with almost any other color. You can easily pair it with intense colors like petrol blue or emerald green, as well as softer colors like powder pink or gray.
To find the color combinations that work best together , you can draw inspiration from different color charts available on the internet, color harmony inspiration boards , or choose two opposite colors from the color wheel (or even one of the two neighboring colors of the complementary color). Two opposing shades go particularly well together, for example, yellow and navy blue.
The application of three colors
This is generally the maximum combination of colors that is recommended to be applied to the walls of the same room.
The third color should be less present than the first two but nevertheless more nuanced in order to create a real contrast and harmony between the three colors.
How to paint a bedroom?
Before you begin, make sure you 've removed any old wallpaper or washed off any old paint and that there are no holes or cracks. Take the space you need and move your furniture and decorations out of the way while the work is being carried out.
First, cover your floor with a tarp to avoid the risk of staining it with paint. Protect the areas you don't want to paint with masking tape (baseboards, window frames, switches, outlets, etc.) and mark off the areas to be painted by creating boundaries with your tape.
Prepare your paint and get started! You can start by clearing the corners of the walls, that is to say, by painting the corners of the walls with a brush as well as all the delicate areas that you will not be able to cover with a roller (along the baseboards, switches, sockets, demarcation areas along the entire length of your masking tape, etc.)
Once this step is done, you can take your roller and paint the rest of the surface! Move from area to area, starting at the top of your wall before moving down. One possible technique is to apply the paint in a grid pattern, alternating horizontal and vertical stripes, so that you move in both directions to avoid creating visible marks. Ventilate your room well when applying to renew the air and allow the paint to dry more quickly .
For better application, you can use a microfiber roller . It is also possible to apply Algo paint with an Airless spray gun (dilute the paint by 5 to 10% with water).
For best results, apply a primer first, then one or two coats of paint (allow your paint to dry for at least half a day between each coat). A matte finish paint is particularly suitable for ceilings , and a satin finish paint will give your walls a new lease of life.
Last little tip: take advantage of the fact that the paint hasn't yet dried to clean your brushes and rollers directly using the indicated solvent (water in the case of Algo paints).
A healthier room with VOC-free paint
We recently discussed this in an article on odorless paint , but it's important to choose a paint that contains as few VOCs (volatile organic compounds) as possible. These substances, often found in the solvents of conventional paints and even some so-called eco-friendly paints, are dangerous to your health and harmful to the environment. VOCs contribute to indoor air pollution by migrating into the air as the paint dries, and you and your loved ones may even develop a paint allergy because of these components.
For healthy air in your home, especially your bedroom, choose a water-based paint with the most natural composition possible and inspect the labels to find a VOC-free paint. At Algo, our bio-sourced paints release less than 1g of VOCs per liter : you can sleep soundly! Discover all the benefits of our beautiful paint in this article.
