Wall painting is one of the final touches to a construction or renovation project: painting your walls has the power to completely change the atmosphere of a room, which is why it is a crucial step that should not be overlooked.
Choosing the perfect wall paint for your walls can be more difficult than expected: between the characteristics of the paints, the composition, the shades, the finishes or even the quantity necessary to cover your walls, many legitimate questions must be asked before putting your rollers and brushes to work on your walls!
Choosing the right paint
Identify the support
The wall support is one of the first elements to take into account before choosing interior paint: plaster, wood or concrete, the material of the support is important in order to choose the wall paint that can adhere best to the support.
Although the supports can be varied, the constructions are mainly made of placo.
Glycero, acrylic or ecological: which paint to choose?
There are several types of paint compatible with your walls: glycerol, acrylic or ecological, all of which have the same overall promise: to guarantee the adhesion of the product to the surface in one or two finishing coats.
While these three types of paints will not fail you, it is important to consider health and environmental criteria.
We spend the vast majority of our time indoors, which is why choosing the healthiest possible wall paint is essential.
There are several factors to consider, including the VOC rate per liter that the paint will release.
This will give you initial information on the possible toxicity of the wall paint.
The composition is also a major element. If acrylic paints are partly composed of water, it must be kept in mind that these paints are composed mainly of elements derived from petrochemicals and are therefore not necessarily healthy.
To confirm your choice, don't hesitate to turn to certified wall paints that hold labels, such as the NF Environment label or the European Ecolabel.
Matte, satin or velvet: Choose the most suitable finish for your walls
The choice of finish is not trivial, beyond the decorative aspect that the finish can offer you, not all will have the same resistance and the same properties depending on the types of supports.
There are mainly 3 different finishes: matte, satin and velvet.
Matte is a finish recommended for ceilings and walls with imperfections. Its lower brightness than other shades is therefore an advantage on this type of surface where light reflection is less present.
This will help hide any wall defects and reduce roller marks on the ceiling.
Satin is the opposite of matte; its aesthetic makes it a sometimes glossy finish. Generally recommended for wall surfaces, this finish has the advantage of being completely washable.
Its use is also suggested in humid rooms such as the kitchen or bathroom. Satin has a reputation for being a durable finish, perfectly suited to this type of room where water vapor and splashes are very common.
Velvet has become a must-have in recent years: it combines the advantages of satin and matte. This finish is therefore applicable in all circumstances and remains the perfect alternative for those looking for a washable finish without having a shiny appearance, often feared with satin.
What color paint should I choose for the walls?
Choosing the right color and decor is crucial to the success of a painting project. Paint manufacturers' color charts contain dozens, even hundreds, of shades, which can sometimes complicate the task of choosing the right color for your walls.
Color can be a reflection of our personality and current trends in decor, but other criteria should guide your thinking.
The size of the room, its orientation and its brightness are all clues that should help you make your choice.
As a guide: Choose light shades for narrow rooms lacking natural light. This will help create a sense of space.
Larger rooms may contain brighter shades, which you can combine with other shades to create color schemes.
While neutral shades like white or beige represent the majority of commercially available colors, the trend in decoration is evolving significantly with key colors depending on the era.
Currently, soft shades of green and grayish greens are very popular. Blues are not far behind, with a resurgence in the use of deep blues.
The current big trend is terracotta.
As we often mention, the final choice of a shade can be made from samples or testers, thus allowing you to confirm your choice.

How to paint a wall?
Painting the wall is the final step in the mural project. There are several steps to complete to successfully paint your wall.
First, take the time to prepare your wall and clean it to remove any impurities and dirt it contains (especially dust or grease stains) with a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with soapy water.
After cleaning, you can fill the holes with a suitable filler before sanding the surface to obtain a smooth and even wall.
Choose the right tools for painting your wall: this generally includes a paint tray with a sash brush to clear the corners as well as a 14 mm microfibre roller (for Algo paints).
It is also possible to dilute the paint slightly with clear water to facilitate its application.
Applying a primer is essential to ensure the adhesion of the top coat, so it's important not to skip it. The primer is applied only once, using the same process as the top coat.
Applying the finishing paint to your walls should be done in two coats for the best possible finish. Don't hesitate to paint in one square meter areas, crossing the coats. Avoid overloading the roller and apply a thin, thick coat.
To distribute the paint evenly over the surface, do not hesitate to make a final pass once the surface has been painted to distribute any excess paint on your wall.
