Wall paintings are of vital importance because they are the most visible decorative aspect in an interior.
Beyond the choice of shades, the technical aspect is particularly important because it is what will allow you to have the best possible result.
In order to best support you in choosing your paints and the style to bring, we will advise you on the paint to choose, the finish and rendering and the color trends from our color chart.
To take it a step further, we'll share our top tips for applying paint.
The different types of paint
Wanting to do painting work on the walls is one thing, but first of all it is important to choose a suitable, quality paint that can meet the various criteria that we consider necessary for the successful completion of your painting work.
Solvent-based paints
Solvent-based paints have long been the most widely used paints: particularly water-based paints and acrylic paints.
And yes, water-based paints are not necessarily natural!
The main advantage of this type of paint is its durability. The versatility offered by the finishes is also a considerable advantage: finishes are available in matte, satin, and velvet finishes.
However, these paints are not known for being the healthiest. In fact, an acrylic or water-based paint will release much more VOCs. Beyond this characteristic, a water-based paint will be made up of 60% petrochemical elements, which therefore does not make it a natural paint, although its name can cause some confusion.
Ecological paints
Long criticized for their low-quality appearance, eco-friendly paints are now recognized and meet all the specifications of traditional paint. They offer a host of significant advantages, whether practical, technical, or aesthetic.
These paints dry very quickly, 30 minutes to the touch. The absence of odor is also an undeniable advantage for application.
These paints are also washable, just like conventional paint. With Algo paints, all finishes are washable, even the matte finish!
Some ranges have their own particular advantages: Algo paints, for example, have a yield of 12m²/L, which is higher than traditional paints on the market.
The undeniable advantage of this type of paint is the use of a healthier product that protects the environment and the health of those who live in the area.
The vast majority of paints today contain less than one gram of volatile organic compound per liter, but be careful: not all VOCs are equally dangerous, and a low VOC level is no guarantee of the paint's healthy and ecological appearance (water-based paints are an example).
Algo ecological paints are made from ecological and local raw materials and are European Ecolabel certified.
Choosing paint according to the rooms in the house
The choice of finish
Depending on the room in which you want to carry out your painting work, you will not use the same finish or the same color mainly for a question of style and decoration.
Understanding environmental conditions, for example, is necessary to choose the right color or finish.
Exposure to light or humidity, for example, is very important.
In humid rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, the finish is the key factor. A satin finish will be more useful in a humid room because it's more durable and, above all, easier to wash.
For other rooms in the house, satin or velvet finishes are what we recommend for your interior: they are aesthetic and meet technical criteria, particularly washability.
Remember it is important to choose the right packaging to ensure you do not run out of paint during your project.
Trendy colors
By definition, fashion eventually goes out of style. It's therefore important to consider the different color charts available to you to choose the right color to apply to your walls for a trendy decor.
First, there are neutral and timeless shades like white, beige or gray.
These are the colors that are mostly used on walls, and this is even more the case with white.
There are also an infinite number of colors that can be divided into two types: bright colors and pastel colors. Among pastel colors, sea greens are very popular. These colors can be combined with an infinite number of other colors and are known for their serene and soft character.
For those who are more daring when it comes to decoration, bright colors like mustard yellow, cobalt blue or terracotta are also very fashionable.
Please note, however, that we recommend using this type of color on one section of wall only.
How to apply paint to walls?
Applying paint is not the most difficult thing if you follow the necessary steps from preparation to application of the paint.
The process will vary very little depending on the room in which the paint is to be applied.
Before painting, make sure the surface is clean and smooth and that you have all the necessary tools to carry out your work with complete peace of mind.
First things first: you will need a paint tray, a roller and a brush.
Other optional tools that can help you greatly include a tarpaulin to protect furniture and wall elements or smooth masking.
First and foremost, it's important to consider the tools you'll use to paint your wall. They won't all have the same purpose. For example, a roller is very useful on smooth, flat surfaces with a large surface area.
Conversely, using edging brushes can be very useful for painting corners or for obtaining more precision on certain parts of the surface.
Please note that there are several sizes of edging brushes, depending on the angles or touch-ups you wish to make as you work.
It's also possible to paint with an airless spray gun. This will save you considerable time during application. Be careful, however, because using a spray gun can slightly reduce the expected performance of the topcoat and also the undercoat.
The application of an undercoat is highly recommended, to even out the surface and to facilitate the application of the finishing paint.
When it comes to application, it's important to apply the paint evenly and distribute it evenly. Painting in 1m² areas is ideal to avoid overspray and overloading the paint roller.
To ensure you have an even coat of paint, it is very useful to go over the painted area again without reloading the roller to distribute the paint evenly.
Respecting the drying time recommended by the manufacturer and applying two finishing coats will guarantee the best possible result.
Is it mandatory to apply an undercoat before painting my walls?
Although underlayment is not mandatory, we strongly recommend using one.
Indeed, the main purpose of the undercoat is to even out the surface and start with a clean and healthy wall. In other words, it helps to hide and reduce imperfections in your wall.
Whatever type of wall you are using, the use of a bonding primer (undercoat) is therefore strongly recommended.
What should I paint first, the ceiling or the walls?
This is a question we often ask ourselves.
We mainly recommend applying paint to the ceiling first before the walls for the simple reason that the ceiling will already be painted and in case of drips or overflows the paint will not reach your freshly painted walls. Remember that the most recommended finish for painting your ceilings is a matte finish.
